SEO extensions for Chrome: 14 of the best tools for analysing sites

An SEO specialist's work involves analysing an enormous amount of information gathered from different sources, and every unnecessary action can seriously dent productivity. SEO plugins for the browser solve several important problems.

They show more information without your having to open extra services and tabs. They also supplement data from other sources, widening the scope for analysis and for shaping an SEO strategy.

We have put together a selection of SEO extensions for different tasks. Among them:

  1. working with a site's semantics;
  2. checking and analysing Google's results;
  3. technical analysis of sites and individual pages;
  4. quick access to data from other tools such as Serpstat, and more.

Add-ons for all of that are available to download in the Chrome extension store.

SEO extensions for analysing search results

An SEO specialist has plenty of routine tasks tied to monitoring search results. The list includes:

  1. gathering information on competitors;
  2. obtaining extra data about sites;
  3. tracking changes.

Here are several extensions that will help you do the work more effectively and considerably faster.

GeoClever

This tool shows what Google's results look like in different regions. You simply choose the country and the territorial unit you need and see Google through the eyes of local users.

That is often needed for a quick assessment of how a page ranks in different regions.

Plugins for quick analysis of sites and pages

Gathering basic data about pages often eats a great deal of time. Dedicated extensions will help you view and save these faster:

  1. title,
  2. description,
  3. URL and so on.

Which tools can be used for that?

The Tech SEO — Quick Click Website Audit

This plugin's window gathers links that check a page through several dozen tools. You will find content checkers here, speed analysis, and analysis of a site's link profile.

Few people know this tool and it is badly underrated. Used properly, this browser plugin will produce express audits of small sites.

At the very least it will save you the CTRL+C, CTRL+V of analysing a site.

SEO META in 1 CLICK

This plugin quickly pulls the main page data that affects its position in search engines.

The same extension helps analyse the structure of the text on a page: you see how many h2 and h3 headings there are. That information is useful when analysing competitors and drawing up a brief for copywriters.

It also shows information about the images on a page, alt attributes included.

Need to look through the links on a page? SEO META in 1 click will do that too.

Wappalyzer

Shows a large amount of technical information about a site, useful for SEO specialists, marketers and web developers. With the extension you will see:

  1. the CMS the site runs on;
  2. the analytics systems installed;
  3. information about the database;
  4. the name of the blog platform;
  5. information about the web servers;
  6. the frameworks and other technologies used;
  7. the JavaScript libraries used, and more.

All of that data is available in the plugin's window as soon as you open a site.

LightHouse

A tool for quickly analysing a site's loading speed and other parameters. From the plugin's window you can move to the LightHouse site and see detailed analysis results.

You will see recommendations that help improve the site's speed.

XPath Helper

Helps build a query for scraping site information with the IMPORTXML function in Google Sheets or with Screaming Frog SEO Spider.

CTRL+Shift+X (Command-Shift-X for Mac users) activates the extension, so that you can point at the elements you want to scrape.

Plugins for keyword research

Gathering semantics is one of an SEO specialist's main tasks. Professional services such as Serpstat, Ahrefs and Semrush are normally used for it, but professional browser extensions can be useful too, filling the information out.

Let us look at several options you can use.

Keywords Everywhere — Keyword Tool

This extension has free and paid functionality. The free version lets you:

  1. view search suggestions for the queries you enter;
  2. export the information;
  3. view data on video optimisation in YouTube;
  4. research keywords for Amazon, eBay, Bing, Etsy and more.

The main capability of the paid version is viewing keyword statistics and changes in search volume.

Ubersuggest

This comes from Neil Patel's team, and his name is well known to the whole SEO community. The plugin gives you access to data from the popular Ubersuggest service. To use it you first have to register an account of your own.

The service will show you:

  1. the search volume of queries;
  2. the cost per click in paid search;
  3. how to optimise for search in Google, Amazon and YouTube.

The service also generates search suggestions for creating content. Once installed, it shows a traffic estimate beside every result in the top ten.

Keyword Surfer

An equivalent of Ubersuggest, with several differences and even some advantages. Even the free version shows the approximate search volume of keywords in the region you choose. You will also see related queries, how competitive they are and how often they are searched for.

The service also includes a built-in content editor that suggests LSI words for the text. There is a drawback, though: the system currently recognises only exact word matches.

On the whole, Surfer's plugin complements this developer's other tools and makes an SEO specialist's work simpler.

TextOptimizer

This browser plugin is positioned as a help in creating content. The tool analyses the results for queries relevant to your site, and afterwards gives you a list of words to use in your text. That helps you get past competitors in the results.

Link information can be analysed in the browser too. Here are several tools for it.

Free Backlink Checker by LRT

The name is a little confusing here: the extension analyses the outbound links from a page. Broken links are highlighted in red. All the information can be exported to XLSX or CSV together with the links' anchor texts. You can set how long the service waits for a page to respond, which means slow URLs will not end up on the list of broken links.

The service is a great help in finding link-building opportunities through broken links on other sites.

Hreflang Tag Checker

The tool analyses hreflang tags and checks whether there are return links to them. It speeds up checking that the tags on your pages are correct considerably. You will clearly not use this plugin every day, but it helps with one routine task that eats a mass of time without automation.

If you need to, the plugin can simply be disabled rather than removed.

Tools for checking positions

Browser extensions can also help check a site's positions for important search queries. Let us look at the tools you can use for that.

SEO Search Simulator by Nightwatch

The plugin imitates a search query arriving from a particular country, and so checks a page's position for a specific query within the top hundred results. It will also track the difference in positions between regions.

SERPTrends

Lets you monitor queries in Google, Bing and Yahoo. Enter the same query again after a while and the plugin shows how positions have changed since the last time. It also displays extra information about every site.

Summary

Not all of these plugins will be in daily use, of course. But tools you do not currently need can be disabled without removing them from the browser.

We will update the selection you see here from time to time and extend the information on each tool, so do save it to your bookmarks.
