Website migration questions
Clear answers to common questions before you move a website.
How much does website migration cost?
Migration is free with any hosting plan. You can move up to three websites to one service. Use Site Import in Plesk yourself or ask our support team to handle the migration.
What is moved automatically?
WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and PrestaShop are moved in one operation, including their files and database. For another system, select the folders and databases manually. MySQL and MariaDB are supported; PostgreSQL must be moved manually. Email is imported separately.
Will my website be unavailable during migration?
No. Visitors keep seeing the old website until you point the domain to the new hosting. Nameserver updates usually take up to 24 hours, but can take longer. Keep the old hosting active and paid until the move is complete.
Are website migration and domain transfer the same thing?
No. Your website moves to our hosting, while the domain can remain with its current registrar; you only need to change its nameservers. Moving the domain registration to us is a separate process described on the domain page.
What happens to the SSL certificate?
After the domain points to our servers, we will issue a free Let’s Encrypt certificate. If you have a paid certificate, contact support before switching the domain so it can be reinstalled.
Can you migrate my email too?
Yes, using a separate wizard and one mailbox at a time. You need the full mailbox address, its password and IMAP enabled on the old host. Messages and folders are copied; the original mailbox is not deleted. Email hosted by another service can stay there if you preserve the domain’s mail records.
Which PHP versions are available?
You can select PHP 5.6 through 8.3 in Plesk. If an older website does not run on a newer version, migrate it with its current version first and change PHP only after testing.
Should I make a backup before migration?
Yes. Save a backup of the website and database, especially if the destination domain already contains files, because the import may overwrite them.
Can I test the migrated website before changing DNS?
Yes. Add the new server IP and your domain to the hosts file, save it, clear the DNS cache and open the website at its usual address. Only your computer will show the new copy. Remove the line after testing.
How long does website migration take?
An exact time cannot be given in advance. It depends on the availability and speed of the old host, the website’s size and structure, the number of files, databases and mailboxes, and transfer speed. Once support has the login details, we can assess the work more accurately.
Which hosting plan should I choose for migration?
Choose WordPress hosting for an existing WordPress site. For company websites, online stores, forms and most other CMS platforms, choose shared web hosting. If you are unsure, describe the website to support and we will help you choose.
