A summer of updates from Google: what to expect from the June and July core updates

Wednesday 2 June brought Google's June 2021 core update. And that is not all: next month the second part of the main update arrives — the July 2021 update. The community of SEO specialists and marketers is waiting for the changes with interest and with apprehension. The Host4Biz blog editorial team took an interest too.

Historically, Google has released core algorithm updates every few months. Only about six months had passed since the last one, the December 2020 core update. Before that, seven months had passed since the May 2020 core update, which took place on 4 May 2020.

Two main updates. Why is Google releasing two different core updates a month apart? Google said that some of the improvements it had planned for the June 2021 update were simply not fully ready to launch.

So Google decided to go ahead with the parts of the update that are ready today, and the rest will be released next month in the July 2021 core update. Google will announce separately when the July 2021 main update is released.

Google's representatives suggested there may be small changes in positions in June that will be offset after the July part of the update.

What should you expect from the updates?

As usually happens with algorithm updates, positions may fall, rise or even stay stable. Google points out that most sites barely notice its updates. But anyone running several projects will most likely see a difference, which may be offset in July.

What should you do?

Only around the middle of June will it become clear how well founded Google's reassuring comments are.

What should you do about the updates until then? Here we will limit ourselves to short pieces of advice that certainly will not hurt:

  1. Analyse. Watch your positions and your site's other metrics particularly closely. Any change can be highly informative.
  2. Get on with technical SEO. Your sites certainly still have sore spots you have not got round to. Fix those errors.
  3. Make sure the hosting is reliable. We do not know what your site's positions will be. But we are sure that with hosting from Host4Biz it will run reliably, which means the greatest possible number of visitors will see it. Move to our VPS or WordPress hosting.
  4. Get on with the content. There is always something to improve and add here too. Find the time and the resources. Refresh the content on the site.
