WordPress 5.7 Esperanza: what changed

To keep the CMS convenient, secure and modern, WordPress developers update it constantly. March 2021 brought a new version of the engine — WordPress 5.7 Esperanza. Here is what changed in it.

Elements that previously had to be configured through code can now be set up on your own.

Two examples:

  • Font size can now be changed in several places.
  • Standard manipulations with the layout have become simpler too. A few clicks will now stretch an image vertically or change its other parameters.

What else has changed?

The Gutenberg editor has become more convenient still

Working with font size is easier. Size control now lives in the List and Code blocks, so there is no need to switch to another screen just for that change.

The My Blocks menu has become more convenient and better as well. It is now saved with every save of the post. Elements are also easy to insert by dragging, and blocks and patterns can simply be dragged into a post.

Quick migration to HTTPS

Moving a site to a secure connection has become simpler. It now happens automatically as soon as you click the Switch to HTTPS button. To reach it, go to the Tools tab and then to the Site Health section.

Moving to a secure connection quickly matters for every site, and for e-commerce projects especially. An SSL certificate for a site, by the way, can be obtained from us on the SSL page.

The colour palette

WordPress has standardised the palette to 7 colours and 56 shades. The advantage is that every shade meets modern contrast requirements against white and black.

Other technical changes

Another difference in this WordPress build is a new API based on filters. A setting has been included that decides whether search engines may index large media from the site.

There is also support for lazy loading of iframes, which improves the loading of pages with embedded elements.

A great deal was updated in Gutenberg 10.1, but it is not yet included in the core.

The new version of WordPress was built on the basis of almost a thousand pull requests on GitHub and 250 tickets on Trac. 480 volunteer developers worked on it.

Summary

This version of WordPress contains no revolutionary changes, and that is as it should be: an upheaval in the interface and the functions is often met with scepticism. The build is a fairly successful one. Any kind of site can be assembled on it, faster and more simply.
