Resource usage policy

What is the resource usage policy?

On shared hosting, a server's resources are divided between the clients using services on that server. Although the machines behind the shared services have considerable resources and computing power, no single user may consume them in an uncontrolled or improper way. Limits therefore apply to user accounts; their purpose is to protect the accounts of Host4Biz clients who use the shared services in the standard, normal way — for their own websites and their own e-mail. The limits are defined, but it is Host4Biz that decides whether a given account is abusing the hosting service. These rules apply to shared hosting and to reseller hosting.

Measures that restrict the activity of a hosting account in certain situations are dictated solely by the care we take to protect our clients, more than 99.5% of whom use the services in such a way that the limits described here do not apply to them and their use of the account stays within every limit described.

Enforcement

It is worth knowing that many of the limits presented here are so-called soft limits, so exceeding one does not automatically have consequences. If, however, your activity on the hosting account starts to affect the overall performance of the server it sits on, such limits have to be defined. Without them it is extremely difficult to explain to a client that their account is causing excessive use of the server's resources. A quantitative statement is therefore necessary.
If a client's account exceeds the defined limits, we will try to work with the client and allow 24 or 48 hours, 5 or 10 days (depending on the kind of excess and its effect on the server) for the client to take steps that eliminate the problem. If the client takes no action to reduce resource usage within that time, we will be forced to terminate the agreement within a further 24 or 48 hours, 5 or 10 days (depending on the kind of excess and its effect on the server). We therefore reserve the right, in accordance with the hosting services Regulations, to suspend the service immediately if it is the cause of more serious problems.

Rules

E-mail and spam

Using Host4Biz servers and network to send unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail (activity bearing the marks of spam) is strictly prohibited. Spam in any form, whether deliberate or not, is neither accepted nor tolerated by Host4Biz.
Transmitting spam from our servers and network may cause irreversible financial damage and may seriously affect the reputation of Host4Biz. Any activity of this kind will be pursued with the full force of the law.
Cooperation with any client who unambiguously sends spam from our servers or network will be terminated immediately, and the service the spam was sent from will be deleted without notice.

General restrictions

Backups
Host4Biz does not permit the use of its servers as space for storing backups, or as space for file sharing and the like. A client who needs space for archive data or shared files should use services designed for the purpose, such as Dropbox or Google Drive.

Reselling
Reselling space on a hosting account is not allowed on shared services. If you run an agency that, for example, builds websites and you want to offer hosting services to your own clients, you should buy a reseller plan or dedicated hosting for that purpose.

Adult content
Pornography is not allowed under any circumstances. Nudity and adult content aimed at earning revenue (e-commerce, shops) is allowed as long as it does not breach Polish law. Host4Biz is the sole arbiter of what constitutes a breach of this rule.

Chat applications
Any interactive web applications such as chat are prohibited on Host4Biz shared hosting accounts (this does not apply to dedicated hosting). This covers applications written in PHP, Perl, CGI, Python, Ruby and the like. Any web application that enables real-time chat and uses the resources of any Host4Biz shared server is prohibited — for example shoutboxes, chatboxes, live chat, helpdesks and the like.

Web applications
Any web applications that are out of date yet still actively used will be removed from the server immediately and without prior notice. As a webmaster — or as someone who has entrusted the care of their site to a third party or another organisation — the client should be able to assess the web applications and scripts they use. The client should keep them under review, assessing their condition, how up to date they are and their level of security.
Forums and any applications with a comment system should be equipped with spam protection or moderation. CAPTCHA is a popular mechanism for eliminating a significant proportion of spambots on a site.

  • All other kinds of content and activity that may contribute to increased use of the server's resources are prohibited.

The services and content listed above, which may create excessive or uncontrolled system load on Host4Biz servers, may only be run in a suitable environment (for example a dedicated server). Any breach will result in the account being disabled or suspended, and even in termination of the agreement.

General resource usage limits

  • Maximum momentary CPU core usage is 35% (the level depends on the hosting plan held).
  • Maximum average CPU core usage is 5%.
  • Maximum momentary RAM consumption is 1 GB (the level depends on the hosting plan held).
  • The number of simultaneous processes should not exceed 15.
  • The number of open files may not exceed 64.
  • Programs may not run in the background or listen on a network port. If you want to run your own bot or daemon, you should consider a dedicated server.

These limits do not apply to dedicated hosting services. There, resource usage is configured in consultation with the client.

Database limits

  • All database users are limited to 30 simultaneous connections to the database server.
  • A database may not exceed 1 GB in size.
  • The maximum number of select queries per hour is 100,000. For hosting plans withdrawn before 25 March 2013, for example the K and DA series accounts: 50,000.
  • The maximum number of changes to databases (insert, update, delete) is 50,000 per hour. For hosting plans withdrawn before 25 March 2013, for example the K and DA series accounts: 25,000.
  • The maximum number of connections established to a database per hour is 10,000. For hosting plans withdrawn before 25 March 2013, for example the K and DA series accounts: 5,000.
  • The maximum duration of a single database query is 15 seconds.
  • Database servers may only be used by sites hosted at Host4Biz.
  • Remote access to databases may only be used for administrative purposes.

These limits do not apply to dedicated hosting services. There, resource usage is configured in consultation with the client.

Files and directories

  • The total number of nodes (each page file, php file, directory and so on counts as 1 node) may not exceed 100,000.
  • A single directory may not contain more than 2,500 nodes directly. Directories inside it count towards this figure, but their contents do not.

These limits do not apply to dedicated hosting services. There, resource usage is configured in consultation with the client.

Web/Apache/Nginx

  • The number of simultaneous connections to Apache from a single source at any one time may not exceed 50.
  • Processes should not spawn subprocesses.

These limits do not apply to dedicated hosting services. There, resource usage is configured in consultation with the client.

Mail

  • A single process should not send mail to more than 25 recipients.
  • The maximum size of a mailing list is 1,000 recipients.
  • POP connections are limited to 60 per hour.
  • SMTP connections (outgoing mail) are limited to 500 per hour per domain.
  • The maximum number of messages stored on an account is 5,000.
  • Mailing lists of more than 1,000 recipients require a dedicated server. Splitting lists into smaller ones to get around this limit is prohibited.
  • A mailing list of more than 600 recipients may only be used to send mail outside peak hours, that is on Saturday, Sunday or on working days between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Every mailing list must be configured to send no more than one message every 10 seconds. If the mailing software you use does not let you set the sending rate, you should use other software that does. This limit matters a great deal: left uncontrolled, sending can easily place a significant load on the server and cause problems for other users. If you do not observe this rule, your account will be blocked.
  • We do not permit mailings to address lists that you bought or were given. That is spam, and we do not tolerate activity of this kind in the slightest.

These limits do not apply to dedicated hosting services. There, resource usage may be configured in consultation with the client.

Cron (scheduled jobs)

  • Cron jobs should use the «nice» command. We allow a value of 15 or higher. More about the command is in the Unix/Linux man pages.
  • Cron jobs should not run more often than every 15 minutes.

These limits do not apply to dedicated hosting services. There, resource usage is configured in consultation with the client.

Shell

  • Our servers should not be used as an SSH jumping-off point to other servers or networks.
  • You may not use the «find» command recursively on directories nested 5 levels or deeper.

Dedicated IP addresses

A request for a private IP address requires specific justification. An SSL certificate, for example, can be such a justification.

No limits

On some hosting plans Host4Biz does not impose limits such as a cap on the capacity a client may use. Host4Biz makes every effort to give its clients enough disk space and data transfer for their websites to work, within the limits set out in this document. Host4Biz monitors all servers, both automatically and by hand, to make sure that no client adversely affects the accounts of other Host4Biz clients on the same server.
Please remember that shared hosting plans are intended for hosting websites. Using them for purposes such as data archiving space (for example backups) or storing file repositories, MP3s, video, photo archives and the like is prohibited. Breaking these rules may result in immediate termination of the agreement without a refund.
Host4Biz provides users with bandwidth, disk space and other resources, such as e-mail and FTP accounts, whose parameters are stated on the Host4Biz pages describing the individual hosting plans. In some cases Host4Biz does not state a particular amount of bandwidth, disk space or other resources, and they are then marked as «Unlimited». In all such cases the hosting services are intended for normal use for websites and e-mail. Host4Biz reserves the right to suspend, interrupt or delete the accounts of users whose use of disk space, bandwidth or other resources causes, or raises the risk of, disruption to the services Host4Biz provides to other clients, regardless of the amount of disk space, bandwidth or other server resources.
Space on shared hosting services is intended for normal use, which means it is limited to web files, live e-mail and the content of the hosted websites, and not to storage (of media, e-mail or other data). Hosting space may not be used as mass storage for electronic files, e-mail or as an FTP server. The client is responsible for deleting any files, e-mail messages or other data that do not meet these requirements. Failure to do so may result in such material being deleted (including, without limitation, files and e-mail) and/or in the service being discontinued, or in other action Host4Biz may take at its own discretion.

Failure to comply with the policy

Failure to comply fully with the resource usage policy is grounds for suspending the account and/or terminating the agreement without a refund.
We reserve the right to delete an account without notice. If an account is deleted or blocked as a result of a breach of this policy, you lose your right to a refund.

Questions

The examples given in this document are a general guide and do not exhaust the subject. If you have a question about whether the content you publish or the data you store on your hosting account constitutes a breach, please contact the Abuse team at [email protected].
